The Threads

what the day is really about

A day that gains five thousand feet and loses everything around the subject on the way up. By the last stop there is almost nothing in the frame that is not sky, rock or water — which is the condition this whole day is arranged to reach.

Arcs, on the flat
The Younes and Soraya Nazarian Center at CSUN sets arcs of glass against rectilinear metal panel massing, under a cantilevered roof, on an entirely flat campus with nothing to compete with it. Public, free, and the only stop today near sea level.
Domes
Five thousand feet up
Mount Wilson has carried working telescopes since 1904 — the 60-inch and the 100-inch that Hubble used to prove the universe is expanding. White domes and steel towers on a ridge above the basin. The observatory is open daily, year round — winter is a shorter gate, 10 to 4, not a closure. What does shut is the road, in snow and in fire weather, so check the Angeles Crest status the morning of. Parking needs a USFS Adventure Pass.

A canyon, plugged
Morris Dam is a partially-arched concrete gravity dam across San Gabriel Canyon on SR-39, built in 1934, with a lined chute spillway and three drum gates. Roadside, free, and almost nobody stops.

And under it, one rhythm: flat → high → wedged. An object on a plain, an object on a ridge with everything below it, and an object jammed between two canyon walls with nowhere to stand back.

Start flat. Climb to the domes. Give it two-thirds sky.

The mountain is open every day of the year — winter just shortens the gate from five to four. What actually stops this day is the road: the Angeles Crest closes for snow and for fire weather, at short notice. Check it the morning of. Parking at the top needs a USFS Adventure Pass.

Curved glass set against flat metal panelling under a cantilevered roof, standing on a campus so flat that nothing interrupts it. That is the condition worth having: the building has no context to fight, so it can be put anywhere in an empty frame and left there. Shoot it small, high in the frame, with a great deal of paving and sky doing the rest.

Working telescopes since 1904, including the 100-inch that Hubble used to show the universe is expanding. The domes are white, the towers are steel, and the light at five thousand feet is harder and cleaner than anything down in the basin. The frame is the sky around the dome — put the curve in one corner and let two-thirds of the picture be nothing but altitude. On a clear day the basin is a flat gray sheet a mile below.

A 1934 concrete gravity dam, faintly arched, wedged between two rock walls, with a lined chute spillway and three drum gates across the crest. There is no position that gets the whole thing comfortably, and that is the interest: shoot it as three flat bands — rock, concrete, water — with the drum gates as the only rhythm in it. Late sun runs down the canyon and rakes across the face.

If the Day Turns

two speeds · pick one on the morning

Every leg below carries the same day at two speeds. Dawn is the early, light-driven version; Slow starts late, drops a stop and keeps the good one. Steady is the shape written above. None of them is the failure case — pick on the morning, from how the day actually feels.

The valley
Dawn
Add Sepulveda Dam on the way — it is directly under the 405 route, it is the biggest empty surface in the county, and at seven in the morning it is deserted. It also makes the negative-space argument better than anything else on this day.
Steady
Leave at half seven, the drum by quarter past eight, climbing by half ten.
Slow
Skip it and start the climb at nine. The drum is the least of the three and the mountain is the day.
The mountain
Dawn
Stay for the afternoon and the drive down at golden hour — the Angeles Crest faces west and the last twenty miles of descent are the best light of the day, with the whole basin lit under haze.
Steady
Three hours on the ridge, down by three.
Slow
Protect this one. If the day shortens, cut the dam and keep the mountain — it is the only stop that needs the drive.
The canyon
Dawn
Carry on up SR-39 past the dam to San Gabriel Reservoir and the second dam above it — the road keeps going and the canyon keeps narrowing, and almost nobody is on it.
Steady
Down by three, eat in Azusa, the dam at five, home by half seven.
Slow
Drop it. Two stops and a mountain road is a full day, and the dam is twenty minutes from the 210 whenever you want it.
