Three curved objects, each with more air around it than the last. Glass arcs on a flat campus, white domes on a ridge with the whole basin underneath, and a concrete wall wedged into a canyon. The empty part is doing the work.
A day that gains five thousand feet and loses everything around the subject on the way up. By the last stop there is almost nothing in the frame that is not sky, rock or water — which is the condition this whole day is arranged to reach.
And under it, one rhythm: flat → high → wedged. An object on a plain, an object on a ridge with everything below it, and an object jammed between two canyon walls with nowhere to stand back.

The mountain is open every day of the year — winter just shortens the gate from five to four. What actually stops this day is the road: the Angeles Crest closes for snow and for fire weather, at short notice. Check it the morning of. Parking at the top needs a USFS Adventure Pass.
A day trip's unit is the leg, not the day — each carries a locator map, its theme, and an energy read. A gold pill on the clock means that time belongs to someone else: a door that opens or a slot that was booked. Everything unpilled is a suggested shape, not a schedule.
Sea level, and the easiest light of the day.
North over the Sepulveda Pass and west across the valley floor. Straightforward, and the only easy driving of the day.
Curved glass set against flat metal panelling under a cantilevered roof, standing on a campus so flat that nothing interrupts it. That is the condition worth having: the building has no context to fight, so it can be put anywhere in an empty frame and left there. Shoot it small, high in the frame, with a great deal of paving and sky doing the rest.
An hour of mountain road each way, and worth it.
Up out of the basin on the Angeles Crest and along the ridge. The temperature drops and the city disappears under haze below.
Working telescopes since 1904, including the 100-inch that Hubble used to show the universe is expanding. The domes are white, the towers are steel, and the light at five thousand feet is harder and cleaner than anything down in the basin. The frame is the sky around the dome — put the curve in one corner and let two-thirds of the picture be nothing but altitude. On a clear day the basin is a flat gray sheet a mile below.
Late light down the canyon, which is the only time it is not flat.
Down off the ridge and around to the mouth of San Gabriel Canyon. The road up is paved and open but narrow.
A 1934 concrete gravity dam, faintly arched, wedged between two rock walls, with a lined chute spillway and three drum gates across the crest. There is no position that gets the whole thing comfortably, and that is the interest: shoot it as three flat bands — rock, concrete, water — with the drum gates as the only rhythm in it. Late sun runs down the canyon and rakes across the face.
Back across the top of the basin. An hour, and the sun is going down in front of you the whole way.
