The Dome
Dissolves at Dawn
The Taj everyone has is pink at sunrise and centered from the reflecting pool. The one worth flying for is the dome going white — seen from the garden across the river, on the long lens, with the fog taking the thin minarets before the dome [inferred: nobody’s frame of it has been found yet]. One shape, nearly gone, on a white page. Then two stepwells, where the same fog flattens the light inside the walls so the stairs read as pattern instead of shadow. A dense-fog dawn is the exception, not the rule, so the three Agra dawns are interchangeable: each one goes to the garden or the gate, decided the night before on the fog forecast. Add two sessions at Chand Baori so one of them is flat, and a driver for every road, so nothing here asks you to drive in the dark.
The Threads
what the day is really aboutEvery subject here is the famous one, and the work is to make it unfamiliar without leaving it. The Taj from the north, across the river, with the fog taking everything but the dome. Chand Baori with no sky and no sun on the stairs, so the zigzag stops being a place and becomes a page. Expose for the white, give it one floor, and let the shape carry the frame.
And under it one rhythm: dawn, sleep, a late-afternoon look, bed by nine. The roads happen in the middle of the day, after the fog lifts and before the light comes back.
Three dawns for one dome. Shoot the well in its own shade. Never a Friday at the Taj. Never behind the wheel.

The Map
where it all is · tap a point for its legOpen the whole day in Google Maps ↗ — in order: Mehtab Bagh · Chand Baori · Panna Meena ka Kund. It routes from wherever the phone is, and every spot below links its own leg the same way.
Tap any point for the day it belongs to. Delhi’s airport at the top, Agra three hours south on the Yamuna Expressway, Abhaneri two hours west of Agra on the road to Jaipur, and Jaipur an hour and a quarter beyond it. The Taj and Mehtab Bagh sit on opposite banks of the river; the garden’s south edge is about 340 m from the mausoleum.
The cost, all in (an inferred range, not quotes): business LAX–Delhi round trip $5,000–9,000 · lodging, seven nights with three in a Taj-view room, $4,000–8,000 · car and driver for the week plus an optional licensed guide at the Taj, $1,000–1,500 · tickets about $50 and the e-Tourist visa $25–40 plus a 3% bank charge · roughly $10,000–19,000. What cancels nothing but changes everything is the fog: it is the subject, and it is also what delays flights and slows the roads.
The Days
seven nights · sun computed for 3–9 Jan 2027A long week’s unit is the day — each carries a locator map, its theme, and an energy read. A gold pill on the clock means that time belongs to someone else: a door that opens or a slot that was booked. Everything unpilled is a suggested shape, not a schedule.
Arrive, sleep, let the driver take the morning.
Any arrival before about ten at night works; this row is a planning floor, not a flight. Immigration, the bags, and the hotel car. Fog in Delhi delays winter departures and arrivals [inferred], which is why nothing is booked for this evening.
In bed by ten for once. The driver comes after breakfast, once the fog is off the expressway.
Down the expressway, and the first look from the north bank.
The driver takes it; you sleep. The fog that makes the pictures also makes this road dangerous in the early morning [inferred], so the start waits for daylight.
The point of the room is that every morning starts with a look out of the window: if the dome is gone in white, the day’s plan is already right.
The garden is directly across from the Taj but the road goes round by a bridge.
The scouting evening. You face south with the sun on your right, so the west flank of the dome takes the low light and the north face stays in its own shade. Find where you will stand at dawn — the axis is the line where the dome sits centered between the minarets — and shoot the evening frame while you are there. The gate closes at sunset.
Dinner early. The car is downstairs at 06:40.
One frame: the dome, centered, and white all round it.
With a driver this is fine; you are in the car until the gate, and the gate is a ticketed garden, not a riverbank.
The 90V, centered on the axis, the minarets spanning a half to three-fifths of the frame and the dome about a tenth. In fog the frame is white-on-white and the exposure is the whole job: meter the white, open up a stop and a third, and let the dome hold a pale gray floor. Shoot it every few minutes as the fog moves — the picture is the one where the minarets are gone and the dome is not. On a clear morning the sun is at 115° and well to your left, the dome lights from its east shoulder, and the frame is a different one: take it, and keep Day 5 for the fog.
Back up the cards. If the fog frame is in, Day 5’s dawn is a free morning. Tonight, read the fog forecast and the AQI (see the Air card): a white-out with the AQI over 300 is smog, not fog, and it takes the dome into brown, not white — treat it as a clear morning. If tomorrow looks foggy and today was clear, swap — Mehtab Bagh tomorrow, and the Taj (ticket bought online the day before) moves to Day 5.
No car. The last light from the room or the hotel garden, on the 90V, and bed by nine.
In at the gate’s first minute, and out before the crowd.
Short and lit, on the road the hotel faces. Bring only the camera, the two lenses, the ticket and the passport.
Through the gate and down the garden before anyone stands in it, then off the axis: the centered view from the gate arch is the postcard this trip is not for, so take it once for the record and move on. The 90V on one minaret and a slice of the dome, from the side of the garden, the marble against a white sky and nothing else in the frame. Then the plinth, and a steep upward 38V frame of the great arch and the dome above it, marble and a white sky the same value. Mausoleum interior last, with the Rs 200 ticket.
By nine the garden is full. Sleep.
No second entry; the ticket is for one visit. Read tonight’s fog forecast and the AQI for the Day 5 dawn.
The dome if Day 3 missed it; then the well in its own shade.
The third chance at the fog, or the Taj if you swapped on Day 3.
Go straight to the axis. If the fog is in, shoot until it thins; if it is clear, a second clear frame is not worth the morning, so leave for breakfast.
Pack once. The bags ride in the car all afternoon.
Toward Jaipur on the national highway, and off it to the village. Lunch is in the car or wherever the driver stops; nothing near the well has been checked.
Look, do not shoot: at 14:00 the sun is about 36° up in the south-southwest and half the well is black. Note which walls face away from the sun: those are the afternoon’s pattern.
With the sun in the southwest and dropping, the stairs on the west and south sides face away from it and sit in even shade all afternoon — that is the flat pattern, available from 15:30. The east and north walls face the sun, and the rim’s shadow climbs them until only their top tiers carry light; by about 17:00 almost the whole well is in shade. The 38V from the rim for the whole zigzag, once the lit band is a thin strip at the top you can crop out. The 90V on one shaded wall for the pattern alone: no sky, no rim, no people, stairs edge to edge. Expose so the stone sits just under white.
Into Jaipur in the evening traffic. Two nights.
Sunrise on the stairs, then a whole day off.
Through the old town before it wakes.
Smaller and shallower than Chand Baori, so a low sun can reach into it: the stairs on the west side face east, toward the sunrise at 115°, and take the first light on their upper flights while the rest is in shade — if the hills to the east let the sun in that early, which is not verified. The frame for this trip is the shaded crisscross alone on the 90V, exposed up toward white like Chand Baori, with no lit stair in it; the lit flight against the shade is the frame every visitor posts, so take it second. If the gate is still shut at 07:20, wait; the light holds until about 08:30.
Sleep, eat, look at the cards. The car leaves at 06:30 tomorrow.
The pattern in fog, if the morning gives it; then home.
The one pre-dawn highway leg in the plan. Your driver drives it, but fog on an Indian highway is the real hazard of this trip [inferred]; if the visibility is bad at the hotel door, leave later.
If it is foggy, this is the frame the trip is for at the well: the whole interior evenly lit, no shadow line anywhere. The 90V on the far wall, stairs edge to edge, the white of the fog lifting every gray toward paper. If it is clear, the low sun at 120° lights the west wall’s east-facing stairs while the east side sits in shade — shoot the shaded side, and shoot the people on the stairs for the third frame of the sequence.
The longest road of the trip, in daylight, to the airport hotel.
Shower, back up both cards twice, sleep a few hours. The spare batteries go in the cabin bag, not the checked one.
Home, one stop.
The Spots
where to stand · what the light does · who built itFour subjects. A fine / use judgment / avoid verdict sits in each Stand. Every road leg is your driver’s; tap a spot’s map for directions to its gate, to hand to him.
- Stand
- On the garden’s south edge, on the Taj’s axis, the dome centered between the minarets. Fine — a ticketed garden, reached by your driver, entered at sunrise; the fog makes it eerie, not risky.
- Light
- 5 Jan 2027: civil 06:43, sunrise 07:09 at 115°, 08:00 9° at 121°. You face south; the sun rises well off to your left and lights the dome’s east shoulder. In fog the light is flat and the dome is a pale gray on white; on the evening of Day 2 the sun sets at 245° on your right and lights the west flank.
- Frame
- The 90V, the dome about a tenth of the frame width, centered, everything else gone to white; crop in post for a tighter dome. Meter the fog, open a stop and a third, and keep the dome just off white.
- See
- Babur’s riverside garden, laid out on the same axis as the Taj on the far bank; the Taj’s north face, the one the postcard never shows.
- Stand
- In the forecourt inside the great gate, then on the axis walking north. Fine — a short lit walk from the hotel to the East Gate, and the gate is security-checked.
- Light
- The gate opens 30 min before sunrise: 06:39, with sunrise at 07:09 at 115° on 6 Jan 2027. Looking north up the garden the sun comes from your right, so the east faces of the minarets and the dome take it first. In fog every surface is the same white and the frame becomes pure shape.
- Frame
- One minaret and a slice of dome on the 90V, from off the axis, nothing else in the frame — or a steep upward 38V frame of the great arch and the dome from the plinth, marble and sky the same value. The centered view from the gate arch is the postcard; take it once and move on.
- See
- 🔴 Closed on Fridays. Rs 1,100 for foreigners, plus Rs 200 for the main mausoleum; no drones; no tripod without ASI permission; no food (tajmahal.gov.in).
- Stand
- On the rim walkway, looking across and down; on Day 5 facing the west and south sides, which are in shade all afternoon. Fine — a fenced, ticketed monument in a village, your driver at the gate.
- Light
- 7 Jan 2027: 15:30 sun 24° at 226°, 16:30 14° at 236°, 17:00 8° at 240°, down 17:46. The west- and south-side stairs face away from the sun and are in even shade all afternoon; the rim’s shadow climbs the sunlit east and north walls until, by about 17:00, almost the whole well is shaded. 9 Jan morning: 08:00 8° at 120°, 09:30 24° at 134° — the reverse, with the west-side stairs lit.
- Frame
- No sky. The 38V for the whole zigzag from the rim; the 90V for one wall as pure pattern, stairs to every edge. Expose so the stone sits just under white.
- See
- A square well with stairs zigzagging down three sides and a pavilion on the fourth. Hours and fee NOT VERIFIED from the ASI: aggregators give 08:00–18:00 and Rs 300 for foreigners. Whether you may go below the rim is not verified either; plan from the rim.
- Stand
- On the north or south rim, looking across, so the lit west-side flights and the shaded east-side ones share the frame. Use judgment — it sits in old-town lanes and the gate time is not verified: stay with the car until it opens, and do not go down the stairs if the guard says no.
- Light
- 8 Jan 2027: civil 06:52, sunrise 07:18 at 115°, 07:30 2°, 08:00 8° at 120°, 08:30 13° at 124°. The low sun from the east-southeast lights the stairs on the west side, facing it, while the rest is in shade until about 08:30.
- Frame
- The shaded crisscross alone, on the 90V, exposed toward white like Chand Baori. Second, the lit flight against the shade, which is the frame every visitor posts.
- See
- A smaller, shallower square stepwell than Chand Baori. Hours, fee and stair access NOT VERIFIED: sources give 07:00 or 08:00, free entry, and a guard who stops anyone going down.
Before You Go
the papers, the camera card, the batteries and the costCamera
- Hasselblad X2D II + 38V + 90V, handheld everywhere — stabilizer on, f/8, mode A
- Fog meters gray: +1⅓ on the fog dawns, overexposure warning on, and keep the dome off pure white
- 🔴 No tripod at the Taj without ASI permission; tripods at Mehtab Bagh NOT VERIFIED
- 🔴 No drone — the Taj bans them in and around it; leave it home
- Pair the camera with Phocus Mobile 2 for location: the X2D II takes it from the phone
Batteries and bags
- 🔴 Every spare battery in the cabin bag, terminals covered (FAA PackSafe); if a bag is gate-checked, take the spares out
- X2D battery 7.27 V × 3,400 mAh ≈ 24.7 Wh (my arithmetic) — under the 100 Wh limit, so no airline approval needed
- Power banks reported as cabin-only on Indian carriers too (not read on the DGCA site)
- Four batteries: three fog dawns in a row do not leave time to recharge
Air
- 🔴 Read the AQI the night before every dawn: CPCB’s daily bulletin (cpcb.nic.in, 4 PM, 24-hour average; Agra, Jaipur and Delhi are on it) or the SAFAR forecast (safar.tropmet.res.in)
- 🔴 An N95 outdoors above AQI 200 — CPCB’s “Poor” band, “breathing discomfort to most people on prolonged exposure”. The threshold is this page’s rule, not CPCB’s. Pack a box of ten
- 🔴 Smog is not fog. Fog is water: white, the air near saturation, the AQI no worse than the day before. Smog is smoke and dust: brown-gray, dry air, the AQI over 300. Both hide the dome; only fog gives the white frame
- Go on fog with the AQI under 300. No-go on a brown haze over 300: sleep, or shoot from the window. Above 400 (“Severe”) stay in
Papers
- 🔴 e-Tourist visa: apply 4 to 120 days ahead on indianvisaonline.gov.in — $25 for 30 days (July–March) or $40 for a year, plus 3%
- Passport valid six months, with two blank pages
- 🔴 No standalone GPS unit and no satellite phone or messenger — illegal in India (US State Department)
- US advisory is Level 2; the India–Pakistan border is Do Not Travel, and nothing here is near it
The cost
- Business LAX–Delhi, one stop: $5,000–9,000 (inferred)
- Seven nights booked, six slept: three Taj-view in Agra, two in Jaipur, two at Aerocity (the last one a day room) — $4,000–8,000 (inferred)
- Car and driver for the week + an optional licensed guide at the Taj: $1,000–1,500 (inferred)
- Tickets ~$50 · visa $25–40 · total roughly $10,000–19,000
