The Cretto in
the Capital Year
In 1968 an earthquake flattened Gibellina. The town was rebuilt about ten kilometers to the west; the ruins were left, and Alberto Burri poured white concrete over them in blocks a man’s height, with the old streets left open as cracks. A field of white planes on a hillside, cut by dark lines, and nothing else. In 2026 Gibellina is also Italy’s first Capital of Contemporary Art, but nothing on this shot list depends on that. November gives the flat, low light white concrete wants, an empty field with nothing staged on it, and three dawns to work one subject from the road below.
The Threads
what the day is really aboutEveryone has the Cretto from the air: the white sheet laid over the hill, the whole map at once. It is the picture every drone and every magazine brings home, and it is the one picture this trip cannot take. From the ground the work is something else. The blocks are only a little taller than a person, the hill tilts them toward you, and from the road below them a long lens stacks them into rows of white planes with the old streets running between them as dark lines. That is the frame: not the map, but the gaps in it.
And under it one rhythm: first light on the Cretto, the town in the middle of the day, last light on the Cretto, in by dark. The driver brings you out, waits, and brings you back.
The Cretto from the road, at first light, with the driver waiting. Inside the lanes only with a yes in writing. Spares in the cabin. In bed by nine.

The Map
where it all is · tap a point for its legOpen the whole day in Google Maps ↗ — in order: the Chiesa Madre · La Stella · the road below the Cretto (Poggioreale Vecchia is a short drive past it). It routes from wherever the phone is, and every spot below links its own leg the same way.
Tap any point for the day it belongs to. Everything is within twenty minutes of Gibellina Nuova: the new town with the MAC, the church and the star; the Cretto about fifteen kilometers east on the hill where the old town stood; and the ruins of Poggioreale a few kilometers past it.
The costed line. Flights, business, as read on Google Flights on 10 Oct 2026: one round-trip ticket LAX–PMO–LAX on the 15:20 departure reads $4,751 (Air France + ITA) to $5,115 (ITA only), before the return is chosen — confirm the outbound is the FCO nonstop and the return is PMO 06:10 / FCO 09:15 before paying. Booked as one-ways instead it is $6,836 + $3,450 = ~$10.3K, about $5K more for the same seats, so don’t. Four nights in Gibellina Nuova: ~$0.4–1K (estimate). A car with driver for four days plus both airport runs: ~$1.4–2K (estimate). Doors: MAC €7, Museo delle Trame €8, the Cretto nothing. Total ~$7–8.5K.
The Days
four nights · three dawns · one subjectA long weekend’s unit is the day — each carries a locator map, its theme, and an energy read. A gold pill on the clock means that time belongs to someone else: a door that opens or a slot that was booked. Everything unpilled is a suggested shape, not a schedule.
Nothing to shoot; everything to carry correctly.
Body and both lenses in the cabin bag, never the hold. If the gate asks to check the carry-on, the spares come out and ride with you — the FAA rule says so in as many words.
Sleep through the Atlantic. The passport needs three months of validity past the day you leave the Schengen area, and two blank pages.
Arrive, eat, sleep. The Cretto is tomorrow at first light.
Through passport control, which now means the EU Entry/Exit System: fingerprints and a face photo at the booth, not a stamp. The four-hour gap absorbs it. The Department of State says to carry proof of a return ticket.
Four hours is the buffer: a late arrival from Los Angeles still makes the evening flight. Eat, walk, stay awake.
Down the length of Italy in the dark. On one ticket with the long flight, a late arrival rebooks you instead of stranding you.
Bags, a name on a card, and out to the A29.
An hour on the motorway in the dark, off at the Gibellina–Salemi exit, and into the new town.
Nine hours ahead of Los Angeles, so a 05:00 alarm is 8 p.m. the night before at home; your body will want the early night, so take it.
The frame the whole trip is for, taken on the first morning.
Out of the new town in the dark, east toward the hill where the old town stood. The town’s own directions follow the SS119 to the Cretto’s main parking.
Stand on the road below the south edge and look north up the slope. The Cretto climbs about seventy-five meters from its bottom edge to its top corner, so from here it tilts toward you and the 90V stacks the blocks into rows of white planes, one above the next. Put one lane through the middle of the frame as the dark line running up through them. In civil light the white is soft and the lanes are gray; when the sun clears the horizon at 114°, east-southeast, it comes in from your right, lights the east faces of the blocks and drops the lanes into shadow. That lasts until about 07:30, when the sun is six degrees up. Expose for the white at +1 and watch the overexposure stripes on the block tops, not on the sky.
If the frame is there, the next two dawns are free to try other things. If it rained, they are the trip.
The capital year’s autumn, in one building. Liu Bolin made Macerie (rubble) by camouflaging himself into places in the new town and the Poggioreale ruins in June; it is the Cretto’s subject from the other side.
Ludovico Quaroni’s church in the new town, with a white sphere set on its roof. At noon in November the sun is only about thirty-three degrees up in the south, so the sphere carries a real shadow side. Lead with the 90V from the far side of the square: the sphere and one parapet edge, nothing else, high-key. Then the 38V for the building around it.
Eat, back up the cards, sleep an hour.
Back out to the same hill, this time to the road that touches the field’s top corner.
From the top corner the field falls away to the south-southeast, and the low sun from the west-southwest comes across it from your right. On the 38V the whole slope reads as a sheet with the lanes as dark lines over it; on the 90V, one row of block edges in raking light. Mostly this is the look before the evening that counts: note which lanes go dark first.
In before full dark, driver at 05:50 again.
Go back past the first good frame. The second one is usually better.
Same road, same hour.
Yesterday’s frame, again, a few meters left or right, with the lane you liked best on the cards. If the town has answered yes, this is the morning to walk into a lane on the 38V: the walls are only about 1.6 m high, so from inside you get two white planes converging on a strip of sky. Without a written yes, stay on the road; the frame from below does not need the lanes.
Breakfast, a nap, lunch. The middle of the day belongs to the B&B.
East past the Cretto to the other ruined town; the evening session is a few kilometers back from there.
The other town the 1968 earthquake emptied, left standing as ruins instead of covered over. It is the Cretto’s opposite: what the rubble looks like when nobody pours anything on it. Shoot it from the road on the 90V, a facade with sky through its windows, and do not go through any fence.
Back to the dawn spot for the other light, with no trip home in between.
From the road below, the evening sun is on your left, west-southwest, and it rakes across the blocks the other way from the dawn: the west faces light, the lanes fill with shadow from the other side. The last half hour before the disc goes behind the low ridge is the one. Same 90V frame, mirrored light — the pair is the point.
Dinner, and look at both evenings side by side.
The cards decide the morning.
Only if Thursday or Friday came back gray with rain on the cement. Otherwise sleep.
The Fondazione Orestiadi’s farmhouse museum on the edge of the new town, and this autumn’s artist residencies.
Pietro Consagra’s steel star over the road into the new town. On the 90V, from the roadside, isolate one point of it against a white sky — geometry with no ground in the frame.
Pack tonight; the alarm is 03:00 and the morning is the airport.
Only if Friday’s raking evening was the frame and wants a second take. With a 03:30 pickup tomorrow, the default is to skip it and be asleep by eight.
Spares in the cabin again; cards backed up twice.
The earliest start of the trip, and the safest: someone else drives the motorway in the dark. It reaches the airport 45 minutes before the bag drop closes; a 04:30 pickup would reach the curb after it.
North to Rome before sunrise; the bags are checked through to Los Angeles.
Home by mid-afternoon on the same day.
The Spots
where to stand · what the light does · who built itOne subject and three supporting frames, all within twenty minutes of the bed. Each card names its lens and its verdict — fine, use judgment, or avoid. Tap a spot’s map for directions to where the driver stops.
- Stand
- On the road below the south edge, looking north up the slope, with the driver parked beside you. Fine at dawn with the driver waiting. Use judgment at the top corner on the state road (traffic; stay off the carriageway). Avoid walking into the lanes unless the town has said yes in writing.
- Light
- 19–21 Nov: civil ~06:25, sunrise ~06:53 at 114°, raking from your right until about 07:30 (6° up). Evening: 16:15 sun 6° at 239°, raking from your left; the disc goes behind the low ridge to the west-southwest at ~16:49 (DEM estimate), civil dusk 17:22. The field faces roughly south-southeast, so both ends of the day come across it.
- Frame
- 90V: the blocks stacked into rows of white planes up the slope, one dark lane running up through them, no sky, no road. 38V, only from the top or inside a lane with permission: the whole sheet, or two walls converging.
- See
- About 270 × 310 m of white concrete in 122 blocks about 1.6 m high, poured over the rubble of the town the 1968 earthquake destroyed; the cracks are the old streets (MAC Gibellina).
- Stand
- On the far side of the square for the 90V; closer in for the 38V. Fine.
- Light
- Noon in late November: the sun only about 33° up in the south, so the sphere carries a soft shadow side and the walls keep their edges.
- Frame
- 90V: the white sphere and one parapet edge against the sky, nothing else. 38V: the church around it.
- See
- The new town’s church, a block of white with a sphere set on top; the new town was built as an open-air museum.
- Stand
- On the roadside where the driver can pull off safely. Use judgment: it stands over a state road; never stand in the carriageway.
- Light
- Any. Flat overcast gives the cleanest steel-on-white.
- Frame
- 90V: one point of the star against a white sky, no road in the frame.
- See
- A steel star standing over the road at the edge of Gibellina Nuova.
- Stand
- From the SP27 below the old town only. Avoid going in: access is not verified, works stopped in late 2025, and the safety of the consolidation is disputed (news, Mar 2026).
- Light
- 14:45–15:30 on 20 Nov, the sun 20° falling to 13° in the southwest (223–232°) — south- and west-facing facades are lit, windows go dark.
- Frame
- 90V: one ruined facade with sky through its windows.
- See
- The town the earthquake emptied and nobody covered over — the Cretto’s opposite.
Before You Go
the camera card, the battery rules, the letter, and the costCamera
- Hasselblad X2D II + XCD 38V + XCD 90V, handheld — color
- the 90V for the stacked planes from the road and the sphere; the 38V for context and, with permission, inside a lane
- overexposure warning on — white cement clips first; +1 in civil light, +⅔ after the sun is up
- 🔴 no drone — the State Department says tourists can be fined or detained for using one
Flying
- 🔴 every spare battery in the carry-on, terminals covered — FAA PackSafe: spares are cabin-only, 100 Wh per battery without airline approval
- the X2D manual prints no Wh rating; read the label on each battery before packing
- a gate-checked carry-on gives up its spares to the cabin
- ITA’s cabin-bag weight limit was not read — check it against the camera bag
Body
- Headlamp — two dawns start in the dark
- A warm layer and a rain shell; November in the Belice can be wet
- Shoes for a road shoulder and gravel

What You Got
the frames that survived the editThe geotag gets each frame close to where it stood — close, not exact; the last hundred yards are always a hunt. What a machine can't do is the part below: which ones survived, and whether the day was worth the drive.
The frame of the trip.
—
Did one lane up the middle hold the frame, or did it want two?
—
Dawn from the right or evening from the left — which one is the Cretto?
—
Was Poggioreale a picture, or only the reason the Cretto exists?
—
After
what the day taughtIs a long weekend enough for one subject this far away, or did it want a fourth dawn?
—
Did the ground-level frame read as the Cretto, or as a white wall?
—
Would I go back with permission for the lanes?
—
Did the road frame alone earn the flight, or did it need the lanes?
